No matter what we are facing in life - work stress, financial struggle, or heartbreak - all it takes is a book to comfort us. It can transport us to a different world where we smile, cry, and come out victorious along with the fictitious characters. As per the Transportation Theory, people who read fiction become more empathetic. If you are someone who loves books too, here are five writers that you should read to fall in love with stories all over again.
Kazuo Ishiguro:
Kazuo Ishiguro needs no introduction as a writer. The Nobel Prize Winner in Literature in 2017, he has written nine books so far, with the latest being Klara and the Sun. The speciality of his prose is the restrained style all of his characters portray. In every book of his, it is not so much about what is said on the pages, it is about what is not.
Winner of the Man Booker Prize in 1989 for his third book, The Remains of the Day, this Japanese author is someone you should not miss out on.
Khaled Hosseini:
Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-American author who has taken the literary world by storm. His books are all best-sellers and for the right reasons. The way this master storyteller describes human emotions and relationships is something unparallel. Some of the most prominent themes of his stories are redemption, grace, and hope even in the face of brutality and the uncertainty of life. The Kite Runner is my personal favourite among all his books.

Fredrik Bakman:
This Swedish author and columnist announced his arrival with his debut book, A Man Called Ove. The book immediately became a bestseller. His books portray characters who are rude and grumpy, but as time progresses, we get to see a completely new side of them - one that is warm and comforting.
The way he tackles heavy issues such as death and suicide with humour is commendable. If you want to read stories that exude hope and positivity but also give sadness and pain its chance, he is the author for you.
Haruki Murakami:
If you are not living under a rock, you must have heard this name. Haruki Murakami has been catapulted into fame, especially in the last few years. It all began when one of his novels, Norwegian Wood, became a bestseller. His works are laced with a sense of loneliness and regret. However, there is not much the characters can do about it, except nodding and moving on.
Magical Realism is another prominent aspect of his stories. He may not be the author for everyone, but those who love him know the power his stories have.
Salman Rushdie:
Finally, let’s talk about our last author for today, Salman Rushdie. He is the kind of author who does not shy away from saying what he wants to say. His book Midnight’s Children has become the Booker of the Bookers twice, giving you an idea of his excellence. He writes mostly magical realism mingled with historical fiction. He talks about complex aspects of life in the guise of the simplest of tales. You may not agree with him every time, but his stories are a treat, for sure.
During a survey conducted in 2017, 30% of the participants said they read every day. Thus, it would not be an exaggeration to say book lovers, or Bibliophiles, if you like the word, are always on the hunt for new stories. I hope you have found some of them by now. There is nothing more magical and inspiring than stories and I urge you all to delve into them. Do tell me, what would be the first book you buy after reading this?
