A trip to New Delhi without burning a hole in the pocket. An all-night jamming session with
strangers-turned-to-friends. Delectable food teasing my taste buds. That’s what I craved after two years of sitting at home because of the pandemic.
Where can I find them all? I knew; backpacker’s hostels.
Why hostels? That’s what I’m going to share next. Read along to find out my experience of staying in a backpacker’s hostel in New Delhi and how you too can reap the benefits.

Affordable rates
The hostel I booked cost me INR 450 ($5.75) a day. However, the charges begin from INR 250 ($3.20). The numbers alone show why hostels are popular among backpackers.
Hostels can offer such prices because hostelers share multiple common facilities including dorms, the kitchen, and the toilet. However, you can get single rooms as well. Furthermore, you can enjoy a free stay in exchange for volunteer services at hostels.
Chance to meet a diverse community

I shared my room with travellers from Germany, England, and Italy, among others. We watched Bollywood commercial movies together, played dumb charades, and even cooked meals together. When I left, my eyes felt moist (or did something go into them?).
It’s not the first time, either. I’ve met and befriended international travellers every time I stayed at a hostel. Meeting, interacting, and becoming friends with people from around the world is an experience no hotel can offer.
Access to kitchen
I loathe the overpriced hotel food. I don’t want to order a spicy meal from a takeaway counter. That’s where hostels come to my rescue.
A community kitchen allows me to cook food I love. The kitchens are equipped with basic amenities such as a kettle and a microwave. Furthermore, I can learn recipes from different cuisine (and different countries); thanks to the other backpackers using the kitchen.
